Choom Chinese #2 — Master Chinese Questions with 谁 (shéi): Learn “Who”, Pronouns & Plural Forms

🤓 What You’ll Learn

✔️ How to ask “Who is he/she?” using (shéi)
✔️ Practice with 他 / 她 / 它 / 我们 / 你们
✔️Understand how to make plurals with 们 (men)
✔️ Use basic people-related words like “teacher”, “friend”

✨ Let’s Begin

(shéi) means “who”.

In Chinese, to ask Who is he, we say:

他是谁?
tā shì shéi

→ Who is he?

In Chinese, the sentence structure is:

👉 subject + verb + noun

Example:

他是老师。
tā shì lǎoshī

→ He is a teacher.

Now, to ask a question like “Who is he?”,
you just replace the noun with a question word like “who” (谁).

👉 subject + verb + question word

Examples:

他是谁?
tā shì shéi

→ Who is he?

这是什么?
zhè shì shénme

→ What is this?

So simple, right?
🟡 just change the last word!

💬Easy Dialogues

Let’s look at very simple, natural conversations:

👩🏻是谁?
tā shì shéi

→ Who is he?

👨🏻他是我的朋友。
tā shì wǒ de péngyou

→ He is my friend.

👩🏻是谁?
tā shì shéi

→ Who is she?

👨🏻她是我的女朋友。
tā shì wǒ de nǚpéngyou

→ She is my girlfriend.

🤔 Wait! They sound the same!?

In Chinese, 他 (he👨🏻) and 她 (she👩🏻) and 它 (it🐶📖) are all pronounced “tā.”
They sound exactly the same, but the characters are different.

🚀Level Up

Making Plural in Chinese

Want to say “we”, “they”, or “you all”?
It’s super simple in Chinese!

Just add (men)” after the pronoun!

📝 “们 (men)” is usually used after pronouns,

but also works with some people-related nouns like:

朋友们 (friends), 老师们 (teachers), 女士们 (ladies), 先生们 (gentlemen)

👉 It cannot be used with objects like 苹果们 🍎 or 杯子们 🥤—those sound unnatural in Chinese.

💬Let’s Talk!

Now let’s see how everything you’ve learned comes together in real conversations.

👩🏻她是谁?
tā shì shéi

→ Who is she?

👨🏻她是我的女儿。
tā shì wǒ de nǚ’ér

→ She’s my daughter.

👩🏻他是你的儿子吗?
tā shì nǐ de érzi ma?

→ Is he your son?

👨🏻他不是我的儿子。
tā bú shì wǒ de érzi

→ He’s not my son.

👨🏻他是我的学生。
tā shì wǒ de xuéshēng

→ He’s my student.

👨🏻他是你的哥哥吗?
tā shì nǐ de gēge ma?

→ Is he your older brother?

👩🏻他是我的男朋友。
tā shì wǒ de nánpéngyou

→ He’s my boyfriend.

👩🏻他们是谁?
tāmen shì shéi

→ Who are they?

👨🏻他们是我的同学。
tāmen shì wǒ de tóngxué

→ They are my classmates.
