✔️ Useful words for shopping & eating
✔️ Say “I want…” using 想 (xiǎng)
✔️ Practice natural patterns with 想
✨ Let’s Begin
Today, we’ll learn 3 of the most useful verbs for everyday life.
We’ll also learn how to use 想 (xiǎng) to say what you want, and how to build simple, natural sentences with it.
The three verbs we’ll practice today are:
买 (mǎi) — to buy
吃 (chī) — to eat
喝 (hē) — to drink
Let’s get started! 😄
📝Vocabulary List
买 (mǎi) to buy
电脑 (diànnǎo) computer
水果 (shuǐguǒ) fruit
衣服 (yīfu) clothes
吃 (chī) to eat
炒饭 (chǎofàn) fried rice
火锅 (huǒguō) hotpot
吧 (ba) suggestion particle (used for polite suggestions like “Let’s…”)
喝 (hē) to drink
水 (shuǐ) water
啤酒 (píjiǔ) beer
Just like we learned last time, both statements and questions follow the same structure: Subject + Verb + Object/Question word.😊
💬How It’s Used
👩🏻你买什么?
nǐ mǎi shénme?
→ What are you buying?
👨🏻我买电脑。
wǒ mǎi diànnǎo
→ I’m buying a computer.
👨🏻你买水果吗?
nǐ mǎi shuǐguǒ ma?
→ Are you buying fruit?
👩🏻我买衣服。
wǒ mǎi yīfu
→ I’m buying clothes.
This time, we’ll practice using the verb “to eat” (吃 chī) in real sentences.😉
🎯Pro Tip
🍜“你吃什么?” Changes with Context
Chinese doesn’t show tense (past / present / future) as clearly as English does. So even if a sentence looks like it’s in the present, its meaning can change depending on the situation (context).
👨🏻你吃什么?
nǐ chī shénme?
→ What are you eating?/ What are you going to eat?
👩🏻我吃炒饭。
wǒ chī chǎofàn
→ I’m eating fried rice./ I’m going to eat fried rice.
👩🏻我们吃什么?
wǒmen chī shénme?
→ What should we eat?
👨🏻我吃火锅吧!
wǒ chī huǒguō ba
→ Let’s eat hotpot!
👉 What does “吧 (ba)” mean in Chinese?
In Chinese, the particle “吧 (ba)” is often used at the end of a sentence to make a suggestion or soften a statement.
It’s a polite, gentle way to say something like:
- “Let’s…”
- “Maybe I’ll…”
🧃 Now let’s practice using 喝 (hē) — “to drink”!
👩🏻你喝什么?
nǐ hē shénme?
→ What are you drinking? / What will you drink?
👨🏻我喝水。
wǒ hē shuǐ
→ I’m drinking water. / I’ll have water.
👨🏻我们喝什么?
wǒmen hē shénme?
→ What should we drink?
👩🏻我们喝啤酒吧!
wǒmen hē píjiǔ ba!
→ Let’s drink beer!
🚀Level Up
So far, you’ve learned three essential verbs: buy, eat, and drink.
Now let’s learn how to say what you want to do.
In Chinese, we can use the word 想 (xiǎng) right before a verb to say “want to do something.”
For example:
👉 想 + 买 = want to buy
👉 想 + 吃 = want to eat
👉 想 + 喝 = want to drink
It’s really simple! Just remember this structure:
【subject + 想 + verb】
We’ll practice with 3 easy verbs: 买 (buy), 吃 (eat), and 喝 (drink).
